labor-day-star-1Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It is a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength of our country.

The first Labor Day was held in 1882. Its origins stem from the desire of the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for workers. It became a federal holiday in 1894. It was originally intended that the day would be filled with parades and other festivities that provided an opportunity for the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations.

In later years, the day was used by politicians to rally this important group to support their campaigns and their issues – I’m sure we’ll see plenty of that “celebrating” happening this year.

So whether you are spending the day with family and friends, attending a parade or a political speech, or if you’re in Arizona, re-watching the entire Downton Abbey series, please take a minute to appreciate the contributions of all workers, including the military, first-responders, medical professionals and others for whom Monday is just another workday.
